Work to install speed bumps along Koutu Rd between Taharangi and Karenga Sts will start this month.

Planned work to renew the foundation of the road has meant the Rotorua Lakes Council was able to take the opportunity to install speed bumps in areas where residents have said it is unsafe, the council said on its website.

Koutu Rd was one of about 100 roads in the district that residents wanted improved and the council said it had been prioritising these based on recorded speeds, risk and crash rates.

Traffic surveys taken on Koutu Rd had shown average traffic speeds were faster than the speed limit.

The work to improve the road includes removing the current seal and renewing the foundation of the road underneath.

While the new seal is being laid, four speed bumps will be installed between Taharangi and Karenga Sts.

Work is due to start this month and be completed in late November, however, a good period of dry weather is needed to be able to properly construct the road, the council said.

Renewing Koutu Rd is part of the capital expenditure included in the 2017/2018 Annual Plan.

The council maintains more than 1000km of roads and 400km of footpaths in the Rotorua district.
