A Mangakino house went up in flames this evening, pulling in fire crews from around the area.

Neighbours reported the house was ablaze about 6.20pm, northern fire communications shift manager Jaron Phillips said. It was not clear if people had been home at the time of the fire.

The 90sq m house in Kahu St was "well involved" by the time firefighters arrived, Phillips said.

Crews from Mangakino, Tokoroa and Taupo attended with four fire appliances, he said.

"A specialist fire investigator will return tomorrow to determine the cause of the fire."
