Sprinkles, marshmallows, Smarties, jelly beans, cream, and icing.

The mouth watering decorations covered more than 100 cupcakes outside Fairy Springs Countdown this morning for the SPCA's national fundraising day.

There were chocolate, plain and even vegan cakes.

If you weren't already spoilt for choice, some were topped with a smiling green frog, a pink pig, a brown dog or a grey cat.

And if you didn't feel like a cupcake at all, there was also muesli slice.

Britta Bowden ran the stall all morning.

Her "love for animals" has lead to more than 25 years of volunteering for the SPCA.

"I want to make sure they [animals] are looked after. The more cash we can make for that the better."

The SPCA Cupcake Day began in 2009 and has since raised more than $2.3 million to support animals in need.

Across the country, volunteers, community groups, and businesses bake the sweet treats and decorate them for the sale.

They are sold at stalls across the country and pre-sold to workplaces or individuals.

Nationally the SPCA is hoping to raise $320,000 this year.

Coffee Club is the official sponsor.

In Rotorua, staff at Jet Park Hotel got together for a big bake with their children to help supply the stalls set up at Countdown Fairy Springs, BNZ, the SPCA Opshop and shelter, and VETPlus.

Rotorua SPCA manager Sue Kinsella said the day was "a little bit of fun".

"It is great to see how happy customers are, especially when kids are deciding which cupcake they want."

She said the Rotorua branch was "very thankful" for all the community support.

"We do not always get the chance to say it to everyone involved."
