Winter has come early for Taupo with reports of light snow falling.

A Taupo Fire Service representative said he had seen some "light snow" in the industrial area of Taupo.

Metservice meteorologist John Law said this was not surprising.

"I think it's the case that we have found a bit of snow in areas on higher ground in Taupo. It's about 7C which is pretty cold."

He said there was a road snowfall warning for the Desert Rd, which was expected to ease this evening and then clear.

"Over the top of the higher ground we could find some more snow fall over the Desert Rd. This is South of Ohakune and around Waiouru."

Rotorua had a maximum of 10C today, and is expected to reach maximum of 12C until Friday, with overnight lows between 2C and 4C.

WeatherWatch head weather analyst Phillip Duncan said there was a chance of light snow in the region.

"It's certainly been a cold day today, since that it snowed this morning in Napier at sea level supports that we had snow around Taupo.

"Generally talking, there is a chance of an isolated flurry of snow, or two, around the regions."

Mr Duncan said it was unlikely for there to be any traffic problems.
