Two state highways in the central North Island have reopened after being closed this morning due to snow.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency said the Desert Road State Highway 1 between Rangipo and Waiouru, as well as SH46 between Tongariro and Rangipo, were closed early on Thursday. The roads reopened by 9.20am.

MetService says snow showers are expected on the Desert Rd above 900 metres from 10am to 5pm on Thursday and up to 1cm of snow may settle on the road near the summit.

SH3 is closed at Awakino, between Maunganui Rd and Awakau Rd, due to a significant underslip. This closure is expected to be in place until Friday, May 12, Waka Kotahi said.

“Our crews are currently on-site assessing the underslip. Please continue to use alternative routes, consider SH4.”
