State Highway 2 between Ōpōtiki and Gisborne is closed in both directions after multiple slips in the Waioweka Gorge.

The closure was reported at 8.19am and remained in place as of 9.10am, with no estimated time for reopening, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) reported.

It said heavy rain had caused multiple slips and surface flooding.

“Crews are on site clearing debris, and an update will be provided when the road is able to safely reopen.”

NZTA advised motorists to avoid the area and to expect significant delays.

In its latest weather update, MetService said thunderstorms and localised downpours for Bay of Plenty were easing after a lashing of heavy rain this morning.

“Heavy rain with thunderstorms and localised downpours over the Bay of Plenty is easing from the west.”

Alternative route

Southbound traffic should head west on SH2 toward Whakatāne, then follow SH30, SH5, Settlers Road, Broadlands Road, and SH1 southbound before reconnecting with SH5 and SH2. Northbound drivers should follow this route in reverse.

NZTA confirmed the road would remain closed until further notice while crews worked to clear the slips.
