Six people have been injured, one requiring a rescue helicopter, in a crash on State Highway 1 near Tokoroa today.

Police were called to a two-car crash at 12.32pm which blocked one lane.

A police media spokeswoman said two people were trapped and had been extracted.

A St John's media spokeswoman said two units were at the scene and had treated six people, two with serious injuries and four with moderate to minor injuries.

One person, in a serious condition, was taken by helicopter to Waikato Hospital.
