Rotorua is one of the venues for the second season of popular Maori Television production My Country Song.

Series producers Blue Bach Productions announced this week auditions have opened for the televised country music show, hosted by Dennis Marsh and Saelyn Guyton.

Musical director Richard Anaru, of Rotorua, said the show was not a talent quest. "There is no competition so there is no pressure. It really is about the singer, the song and the kaupapa, and what it means to the singer.

"It is the singer and the culture which attracted me to the show.

"It is also really good that something so vibrant is coming to the rohe.

"Music is one of the strong and important fabrics of our community."

Billed as "a celebration of the singer and the song" the 13-part series will be filmed live-to-tape in Rotorua, Whangarei and Porirua during November and December.

Blue Bach Productions' Libby Hakaraia said the series provided a platform for musicians to showcase their talent. "This series is unique," she said.

"Performers are encouraged to share their original compositions and their favourite country songs in a supportive environment."

Country music was growing more popular because it was music with great stories, she said. "We had some fantastic talent in the first series and we expect to find gold in this second series."

Presenter Dennis Marsh will act as mentor to performers.

"I am looking forward to working with up-and-coming homegrown artists," he said.

"This is a great opportunity for exposure. Come and share the stage with us."

The first series aired on Maori Television in May 2013 and showcased more than 100 performers, while the Best of My Country Song album reached number eight in the NZ music album chart.

Thirteen shows featuring up to seven performers will be filmed at the three centres.
