Sevens: Double win for Rotorua schools at national champs

Rotorua Boys' High School under-15 side have been crowned national secondary schools champions at the 2016 Condor Sevens tournament.

They took home the trophy in a dominant display to win 24-0 over Hamilton Boys' High School in the under-15 Male Cup final at Sacred Heart College in Auckland on Friday.

Rotorua Boys' final win capped off an impressive tournament which saw them win all their six matches - including a hefty 31-5 quarter-final victory over Francis Douglas College and a 24-2 win over New Plymouth Boys' High School in the semifinals.

Rotorua Boys' under-15 head coach Scott Mayhew said a strong forward pack and solid support play were the winning factors in the final.

"The forward pack really set the standard for us," he said. "They got us going and then we used the ball really well with excellent support.

"We were able to push on right from the off and after building a 12-0 lead at halftime we never looked back."

Rotorua Boys' player Kahlil Aldworth-Bidois was named under-15 player of the tournament and was selected in the under-15 team of the tournament along with teammate Robert Mischewski.

Mayhew also highlighted the performances of Tuki Simpkins, Stuart Leach, Tama Te Aute, Bernie Hati and Nikki Jacobs but added it was a complete "team effort".

"This win finishes off a very good year for a very talented group of students and coaches," he said.

"They gave everything leading up to this tournament with extra practices and it really showed on the day. I am very proud."

Meanwhile Rotorua Girls' High School also tasted a golden victory in the under-15 Female Cup final - beating Aorere College 19-0 on Friday.

Rotorua Boys' High School under-19 side made the semifinals of their grade's Male Cup but were beaten by Hamilton Boys' High School.
