The Bay of Plenty women's sevens team are through to the cup playoffs at the Bayleys National Sevens in Rotorua, following some great results on the first day.

They won their opening three pool matches today, against Wellington, Taranaki and Canterbury, before losing to defending champions Manawatu 19-0.

It means they finish second in Pool A and will face the third place team from Pool B (Otago or Counties) tomorrow at 10.05am, in the equivalent of a cup quarter-final match.

It is a great result for the Bay women who were hit by injury in the lead-up to the nationals. They lost two New Zealand representatives a week out from the nationals, but have shown plenty of promise today.

Manawatu topped Pool A and the top team in Pool B is still to be decided between Waikato and Auckland.

The playoffs, in both the men's and women's divisions, are being played tomorrow.

The Bay men's team have one more match to play today at 6.20pm against South Canterbury, but are already through to the cup quarterfinals tomorrow.
