Residents on a Taupo street where a man died after being hit by a car in a driveway overnight say they heard a party earlier in the evening.

Police were called to a private property on Terence St shortly after midnight.

Taupo police Sergeant Fane Troy confirmed a 53-year-old was hit by a car on the property and suffered fatal injuries. He died at the scene.

This morning a group of people could be seen hugging and comforting each other outside the split level property.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.

Police are yet to confirm the victim's age or say what type of vehicle was involved.

A neighbour told the NZME they heard a party in the street last night, but was unsure whether it involved the property where the man died.

They saw ambulances arrive early this morning.

Another neighbour understood a 60th birthday party had been planned at the house today.
