A supermarket security guard has been hit by a car as two alleged shoplifters tried to make a get away.

A police spokeswoman said two people had allegedly stolen meat from Countdown Tokoroa about 1.30pm.

She said the store's security guard tried to take a photo of the car's number plate when he was hit.

The guard was not injured.

The alleged offenders were stopped by police and are now in custody with charges expected to be laid.
