A section of State Highway 1 closed overnight due to a sinkhole has reopened this afternoon.

The New Zealand Transport Agency said the highway between State Highway 30 Ongaroto Rd and the State Highway 30 Rotorua fully reopened at 3pm.

The sinkhole on the Mangaharakeke bridge closed the section of highway yesterday afternoon.

The sinkhole was about 1.5 metres deep and 6 metres long.

Waikato Transport System Manager Karen Boyt said their contractors and geotechnical teams moved quickly to start repairing the road.
