A dozen Rotorua schools are being tested for or have been identified as having leaky buildings, the Ministry of Education has revealed.

Lynmore Primary School was one of the 12 schools tested and found to be in need of repairs to its hall and library complex. The building was rated at the higher end of the weathertightness severity scale.

The school has been forced to close the building for 22 weeks while the problems are repaired.

Two of the other 11 schools are subject to legal proceedings and cannot be identified at this stage.

Rotorua Boys' High School, Otonga Road School, Rotorua School, Westbrook School and Te Kura o Te Whakarewarewa School are in the process of being tested.

Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Ruamata, Kaharoa School, Malfroy School and Owhata School have been tested and found to have issues in at least one of their buildings.

Lynmore Primary School principal Lorraine Taylor said having to close the hall was inconvenient but "the work has to be done at some stage".

"It is a little annoying but, with that being said, we are very fortunate that we also have a separate gymnasium so we are able to hold our school assemblies in there.

"We have also been able to relocate most of our library resources into a classroom, so it could have been worse."

Ms Taylor said the school was unaware of the weathertightness issues until the Ministry of Education tested the building.

Ministry head of education infrastructure service Kim Shannon said they had been working closely with Lynmore Primary to fix weathertightness issues at the school.

"We are repairing the hall and library building, and expect the work to be completed by the end of August this year.

"The repair project is estimated to cost around $700,000, and this is being funded by the ministry."

Ms Shannon said the Ministry of Education repaired school buildings affected by weathertightness issues after 1994.

She said school boards of trustees was responsible for general maintenance of buildings.

"The ministry is carrying out a nationwide programme of assessment and repairs to schools that have, or are suspected to have, weathertightness issues.

"This work is prioritised according to severity of damage to buildings."

Malfroy School principal Nick Brell said a portion of the school's 'middle block' had weathertightness issues.

"We, as a school, are being kept informed by the ministry in regards to the process and have been told the repair work will take less than two terms."

He suspected work would begin at his school in June.

"The construction won't affect the running of the school as we will have temporary classrooms brought in."
