School holidays in Rotorua a chance to learn about values and hard work

As well as fun and play, the school holidays are an opportunity to learn more about values and hard work, according to one Rotorua family.

Rotorua father Jack Rahurahu's tips for keeping children entertained during the school holidays included going to the Redwoods, beaches, parks, and playgrounds, as well as cycling, gardening, reading, sports and stay overs with family and friends.

He also suggested house jobs for pocket money; something his sons Tiaki Rahurahu, 14, and Raukawa Rahurahu, 8, will be doing.

Jobs will include raking up leaves, mowing the lawn and doing the dishes.

Jack said Tiaki would spend time with his mother up in Auckland so any pocket money he earned could be used up there.

"It teaches them the value of money and understanding that things are earned in life."

He said the children were also proud when they achieved what they set out to do.

Tiaki said he was looking forward to helping out around the house and spending time with the family.

He said he had a water rafting event for the Air Training Corps 75th Squadron while up in Auckland which he had not done before, so was looking forward to the new experience.

His cadet squadron were also marshalling as a fundraiser at a motorcycling event during the holidays.

"I'm looking forward to spending time with my mates and learning."
