Motorists using Lake Rd and Bennetts Rd should take care around road works at the intersection as the Rotorua Lakes Council continues work on the city's cycleway.

Contractors are building a "splitter island" at the intersection; a concrete island that allows for pedestrians, bike riders and other users to cross the busy road in two stages.

Users will be able to cross halfway and safely stop for traffic, rather than having to cross the entire road at once.

The work was scheduled to be completed by November 25, weather permitting, a council representative said.

The work is part of Rotorua's CyWay programme, with splitter islands being installed as safe crossing points for pedestrians and bike riders using shared footpaths.

An example of a splitter island already in place is at the entrance to Marguerita St from the Fenton St roundabout.
