Rotorua Boys' High School's under-14 rugby team has returned home triumphant from its campaign at the Gold Coast Rugby Carnival.
In a thrilling final against the Australian Cavaliers Rugby Academy on Thursday, Raukura's Red team fought hard to come back from a 10-0 deficit at half time to win 38-15.
The Gold Coast Rugby Carnival is a youth sporting event held each July. It is a week-long event focused on spirit and sportsmanship.
It is the second time RBHS has won the U14 division, having lost to the Cavaliers in their first year of competing in 2015.
RBHS player Tamakaimoana Whareorere, 13, said the boys knew they had to dig deep to create more scoring opportunities in the final.
"It was about having to work hard to win as it wasn't just going to happen."
Acting assistant rugby director Sam Cameron said they were up against a quality side in the final.
"The Cavaliers had us in the first half. We were able to come out in the second half where the boys really exposed them out on the wing and were able to come away with a good result," Cameron said.
The win concluded a week of sporting and cultural experiences for the 30 boys.
Spending time at Sea World and being hosted by Maori-owned hospitality businesses on the Gold Coast were some of the off-field highlights.
"We would just like to thank everyone for all their support over the last few days. Without their help and dedication, this trip would never have happened," Cameron said.
"The whole experience for these boys has been awesome. First time out of the country for some of them and to win the U14 section just topped off their whole trip."
