She said another person, who was not involved in the alleged fight, also had to be taken to hospital with cuts to their arm.
Mrs Perks said police had not made any arrests or laid any charges at this stage but had spoken to one of the players involved.
King Country Rugby Union general manager Susan Youngman said an investigation for player misconduct was underway.
"The consequences of this incident are very shocking and upsetting for both clubs, our volunteers, supporters, staff and players.
"There is absolutely no place for this type of behaviour in rugby, on or off the field, and it won't be tolerated.
"Misconduct complaints have been filed against the two players involved in the altercation and the union's judicial officer will have the power to suspend one or both of them from playing, pending the findings of the judiciary."
It was reported an ambulance attended the sports ground and treated and transported two people to Taupo Hospital, one with moderate injuries and another with minor injuries from lacerations from the glass.
