When the All Blacks visit Argentina during the Rugby Championship, Rotorua's Liam Messam will have a special weapon.

Well, kind of.

He can speak a bit of the language.

"I've learned Spanish but that was just from Dora the Explorer because my son watches it, so I have learned a bit," Messam said.

The Chiefs co-captain and former Rotorua Boys' High School captain went into camp last night with the All Blacks in preparation for the Rugby Championship.

The championship kicks off next Saturday when the All Blacks meet Australia in Sydney.

Messam said he was feeling good going into the test campaign, after taking a couple of weeks off following the Chiefs' season.

"I did not really want to [take the time off] but I'm mentally and physically ready to get stuck into this campaign."

Messam and three of his teammates visited Rotorua for a fan day yesterday.

Richie McCaw, Brodie Retallick, Tawera Kerr-Barlow and Messam spent half a day in town meeting fans and visiting Rotorua Boys' High School. Messam captained Rotorua Boys' to a joint national title in 2003 (drawing 6-6 with Napier Boys' High School in the final).

He said he loved playing in Rotorua and would like to see a Chiefs regular-season game played here in the near future.

"I am trying to pull a few strings at the Chiefs to get us down here, I love coming down here," he said. "I keep pushing for it - to get a proper game down here in Rotorua."

All Blacks captain McCaw was still carrying a couple of bruises yesterday from the epic Super Rugby final against the Waratahs at the weekend.

He said it had been a tough week in the aftermath of a final loss, but his body was feeling good going into the All Blacks' camp.

"The body is fine - remarkably good. I'm just hurting a bit from the loss."

McCaw said it was good to see plenty of fans out in Rotorua yesterday at Eat Streat. He said he also enjoyed visiting Rotorua Boys'.

"When I was in the first XV [at Otago Boys' High School] we played the final of the schoolboys comp against Rotorua Boys' High School."

McCaw and his team drew that game 5-5 in 1998.
