If ever there was a contrast in sporting fortunes, it is in the starts Rotoiti and Whakarewarewa have made to the second round of this year's Baywide rugby competition.

Rotoiti have gone two wins from two games, impressing not just in their performances, but in that they were both against heavyweight opposition - Tauranga Sports, in
Tauranga, and Mount Maunganui at home by a solitary point with a try in the final minute of the game.

Whakarewarewa, though, were outplayed by Greerton Marist on the first weekend of the competition and went down heavily to Te Puke Sports last Saturday.

Whaka's conquerors are the visitors to Emery Park tomorrow while Whakarewarewa host Tauranga Sports, who are also struggling with two losses so far in Premier 1.

Te Puke come to Rotoiti with a similar two from two record.

Rotoiti coach Richard Francis knows where his side have to up their game, but is also aware of their strengths and the need to not let those areas fall away.

"We will focus mainly on accuracy across all facets of the game, but more importantly improve our performance and technique at the breakdown," he said.

"Our recent strengths have been defence and set-piece so we to need maintain this."

Rotoiti have put in strong second-half performances in their last four games and, while it has been effective in terms of results, Francis would prefer to see them play just as strongly in the first half.

Francis is also well aware of Te Puke's strengths, from videos and their previous meeting when Te Puke prevailed 40-22 at Murray Salt Stadium.

"Te Puke is showing good attacking structures and support play and we will need to be well prepared to combat this. But we will stick to the old cliche, stick to the basics and focus on doing this well."

Te Puke Sports coach Craig Jeffries won't be relying on the previous meeting's scoreline.

"Rotoiti are clearly the form team of the round with their two wins on the trot in the top eight.

Whakarewarewa coach Joe Savage said belief and attitude were things that needed to change if his side were to progress to the semifinals.

"I can put my finger on [the problem] but it's how do we go about fixing it,'' he said.

"One issue we are having at the moment is the missed tackle count and a lot of it has to do with attitude. It's not so much technique-wise, but the want to make tackles and do whatever it takes for the team - that's something we might be struggling with a little bit.

"We have addressed it, so we are looking for a better attitude towards what we are trying to achieve, bearing in mind it's only seven or eight weeks till the end of the competition and we can't afford to be having little slip-ups.''

The fact that Tauranga Sports are in a similar position is of no concern to Savage.

"It won't hinder what we are trying to do in our preparations for Saturday - we know they have a classy squad.

"We don't know exactly what they are going to bring on the day, but I know and the team knows that we have the ability to go all the way it's just a matter of trying to get the best out of each other.''

Savage will welcome back flanker Lionel Skipwith who has been out injured for three weeks.

Tomorrow's games in Rotorua will kick off earlier than normal due to the Maori All Blacks v British and Irish Lions game.
