Tonight's family-friendly Lakeside concert is expected to pack out, with the top local line-up and impressive fireworks finale likely to be crowd pleasers for all ages.

But with showers forecast for today, concert-goers are being advised to take a raincoat.

With entertainment from 4.30pm and the main show starting at 7pm, the crowd will be treated to local talent such as The Koi Boys, Elisha Hulton and Jack Grace, with Howie Morrison Jnr and Tom Poata MCing the night.

The fireworks display - a highlight for many - is expected to take place about 10.15pm.

Rotorua Lakeside Charitable Trust chairman Ian Edward said there had been high interest in this year's event which was likely to equal big numbers.

Edward said he is not worried about the weather this year.

In its 23rd year, the philosophy for this year's concert is "the people, places and personalities that have created Rotorua's iconic music history", Edward said.

He said people could expect a far greater range of local content this year, as the trust found "local people want to see local artists".

The theme is Waiata Mai #pastpresentfuture and will celebrate the music of Rotorua through the decades, paying homage along the way to those who have gone before, while also looking ahead to what lies in the future.

For the first time in the show's history the concert has pre-choreographed dancing for the musical performances prepared by Turanga Meri to.

Three dance troupes from around the central North Island will perform.

Twelve months of planning has gone into this year's event and Edward says as soon as tomorrow night is over, he will get straight into planning Lakeside 2020.

Lakeside safety message: 'have fun but stay safe'

There will be controlled entranceways this year, with fencing around the entire event.

The concert is family-friendly so people are asked to take a small amount of alcohol - there will be bag checks at the entrance ways for excess alcohol.

Police had one key message for the public, 'have fun but stay safe'.

In a statement, Rotorua area commander Inspector Anaru Pewhairangi said a number of police officers would be working at the concert as was standard procedure.

"We hope that everyone enjoys their night, looks after each other and has a great time."

He said police were working closely with Lakeside organisers and Rotorua Lakes Council to ensure the event was safe.

There will a large number of road closures today as a result of the concert.

From 6am to midnight, Whakaue St, Memorial Dr, Lakefront Dr and Tutanekai St will all be partially closed.

From 3pm to midnight, parts of Fenton St, Pukaki St and Hinemaru St will also be closed.

Edward asked that concert-goers brought low chairs and were mindful of others.

In order for the fireworks display to take place, people need to be seated or stationary to avoid any accidents, he said.

No glass is to be taken in to the event and unaccompanied minors or people wearing patches will be denied entry.
