Thirty-two years ago Rotorua ecological business Wildlands started as a sole trader.

Now it's named Rotorua's Business of the Year - quite an achievement for its 80 staff in 10 offices around the country.

The best of Rotorua's businesses came together for an evening of glitz and glam at the 2017 Westpac Rotorua Business Excellence Awards on Saturday night.

Held at the Energy Events Centre the annual event recognised the work of more than 15 people and organisations across Rotorua.

MC Steve Pinder kept the crowd engaged with his jokes and banter as the crowd enjoyed dinner.

The big award of the night, Westpac Business of the Year, was taken out by ecological company Wildlands.

They were still celebrating yesterday with a team morning tea and director and principal ecologist Sarah Beadel said it still hadn't sunk in.

"We're still celebrating.

"These moments come very rarely in business."

Wildlands works through ecological restoration, solutions and development with small and major companies.

Mrs Beadel started the business 32 years ago as a sole trader but it has grown to employ 80 people in 10 offices around the country.

"We're a real team of like-minded people, it's really cool.

"Everybody is passionate about what we do."
