Sunset Rd has topped the list of the district's most burgled streets.

Neighbourhood Support figures show there were 13 burglaries on 2.9km long Sunset Rd, mainly in the Mangakakahi area, in 2014.

The figure is about the same as it was in 2013, though that year Island View Rd had the most burglaries in the region, with 19 burglaries reported.

In second place this year was Gordon Rd in Western Heights, with 12 burglaries last year.

Neighbourhood Support Rotorua co-ordinator Bruce Quedley said he did not know why certain streets or areas were burgled more than others, but the length and number of properties on those streets was something to take note of.

With more than 400 houses on Sunset Rd, there were more properties prone to break-ins than in smaller streets.

Some streets had known criminals living in them who often targeted their "own backyards" rather than other areas, he said. In other cases, burglars had taken advantage of insecure homes and buildings.

Mr Quedley said Neighbourhood Support figures showed 60 per cent of burglaries were due to a lack of security.

"A large number of burglaries occur when doors are left open, windows are left unlatched or garages are not locked."

He said the number of burglaries in Rotorua has dropped significantly in the past few years, thanks to the efforts of police and agencies including Neighbourhood Support and community patrol groups.

"That number can be reduced a lot further, though realistically, not eliminated entirely."

A Sunset Rd resident, who did not want to be named, said she wasn't entirely surprised to hear the road was the most burgled last year.

She's been living there for more than a decade and her home and garage had been broken into more than five times over the years.

Only a few weeks ago, her garage window had been smashed and some of the contents taken.

She has since had an alarm installed and hoped the burglaries would stop.

When asked whether she'd consider moving to another area, she said she couldn't imagine living anywhere else.

"This is my home. I've been here so long, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. And living here, it has its nice aspects too."

Another Sunset Rd resident for more than 30 years was shocked to find out the number of burglaries on the street.

She said she'd never had her property burgled. "I feel safe and it's a lovely little neighbourhood."

Tips to secure your home
-Make sure your house, vehicles, sheds and garages are secured at all times, even when you are home.
-Install an alarm system - house and vehicle alarms are among the best deterrents to thieves.
-Keep valuables and wrapped presents out of view.
-Join a Neighbourhood Support group and let your neighbours know if you are going away.
-While you're away, make your house look lived in. Put lights on automatic timers, have someone open and close curtains and clear the mail from the letterbox.
-Don't talk about your holiday plans on social media sites, as some offenders trawl them looking for opportunities.
-Make a list of property and record serial numbers. Take photos of unique items such as jewellery and ornaments.
-Mark your property so it can be identified. DNA kits and invisible ink pens are excellent for this.
-Keep important documents and valuation certificates in a safe place.
Dead bolts on doors and windows prevent large items from being removed.
