Information about where to stay and what to do in Rotorua is now easier to access, thanks to a new mobile phone application.
Destination Rotorua Tourism Marketing already has a successful website promoting Rotorua but has now created a web-based mobile application which can be accessed on any phone with internet
access.
Destination Rotorua Tourism Marketing web development co-ordinator Adrian Hodge said any web-enabled phone could access the application, which listed accommodation providers, attractions, events and general information about Rotorua. Mr Hodge said the application was vital for the organisation to reach more people.
He said the service would be invaluable during the Rugby World Cup when masses of visitors would converge on the city. Mr Hodge said the application was still growing and people would be able to make reservations at various accommodation providers and attractions in time for the Rugby World Cup in September.
He said the Rotorua tourism office had recently been recognised in the top five in the country for social media. Rotorua ranked behind Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch but Mr Hodge said it was important for Rotorua to be leading the way for regional tourism offices.
"We are such a huge tourist destination and we want to be leading the way and we want to make it easy for people to get the information they are after," he said.
Mr Hodge said he expected other regional tourism offices to follow and create applications which enabled quick access to information. "I do expect to see a big boom in the next 12 months of people creating these applications," he said.

Rotorua NZ mobile application has:
- 70 accommodation providers
- 56 attraction/activity providers
- 118 retailers across 23 categories
- 93 free things to doBy
