Rotorua to host NZ Music Month Expo

A New Zealand Music Month Expo will be held in Rotorua for the first time as part of the city's focus to support and showcase up and coming local talent.

The expo, to held in the Monarch Room at Princes Gate Hotel Saturday May 19 between 10am and 3pm, will provide advice to performers and those interested in becoming involved in the local music scene.

It will feature information booths from the Rotorua Music School, Rotorua Jazz Club, Toi Ohomai music department, The Rockshop and The Rogue Stage.

Rotorua NZ Music Month co-ordinator Karin Vincent has also planned four concerts during May that will provide an opportunity for new entertainers to perform to an audience and gain experience.

She said they were excited to host these concerts where veteran entertainers shared the stage with newer performers.

"It is a great chance to learn from each other and audiences will be blown away by the diverse and talented musicians we have in Rotorua."

Entry is by koha (donation) with all funds collected going to the performers on the night to assist with their ongoing musical career.

Vincent hoped people would pay what they think the evening is worth.

"The audience is able to enjoy a night full of live entertainment at each concert so I would love to see the audience give generously to support these fantastic bands and musicians."

One of the performances will include a tribute to New Zealand music by Toi Ohomai music students. Under the leadership of music tutor Ben Wilcock, students will showcase a wide range of music by Kiwi artists in a 45 minute set.

Scheduled expo talks:
10am: The Rockshop talks about what to look for when purchasing instruments.
10.30am : Jamie Agnew explains how to care for your instruments and guitar maintenance.
11am: Ben Wilcock presents his latest release Phantom Canoe, an instrumental jazz album inspired by Te Arawa legends.
11.30am: Rotorua Jazz Club will present information about the club and how people can get involved.

The four concerts will be in the Monarch Room at Princes Gate Hotel on the following dates: Friday 18 May (6pm-9.30pm), Saturday 19 May (5pm-9.30pm), Sunday 20 May (2pm-5pm) and Friday 25 May (6pm-9.30pm).
