Bouncing back is the aim for Rotorua teams in the Baywide Premier competition this weekend.

The two teams have home advantage: Rotoiti take on Greerton Marist at Emery Park tomorrow while Whakarewarewa are up against Mount Maunganui Sports at Puarenga Park in round three of their campaigns.

Both local sides recorded an opening win, but failed to back that up last weekend. Rotoiti fell to a 34-21 away loss to Te Puna and Whaka were beaten 36-27 by Greerton.

If last season is anything to go by Rotoiti's match could well be a thriller at Emery Park, after the home side snatched a dramatic 30-28 victory and secured a place in the top eight of the Baywide Premiership last June at the same venue.

Rotoiti head coach William Royal said the squad had worked hard on cutting out errors and improving their kicking game.

"It's good to be back at home this weekend and that's a much-needed boost for us," Royal said. "We made far too many earlier errors against Te Puna and gave them far too much of the ball. The team have been working on ball skills and the kicking game side.

"Greerton are going to be tough. We don't want them to get a second Rotorua scalp in as many weeks. They lost their first game of the season but will be riding high after the Whaka win. It just goes to show in this competition you can't take any result for granted and no team is an easy win.

"They'll have a big forward pack. We need to match them head on, and watch out for their dangerous backs. Saturday is about showing a big improvement."

Meanwhile, Whaka head coach Joe Savage said he was wary of the Mount, which picked up a first win of the season in a narrow 25-24 win over Te Puke Sports last Saturday.

"I'm certainly not feeling overly confident," Savage said. "This week we've really had to work hard and pick our confidence up. The Mount are a dangerous team, looking over footage they have a nippy halfback, so we'll have to be extra careful around our defensive channel."

Savage added basic techniques had been a major focus point in training.

"We've done a lot of fundamentals work, like our tackle technique and how to dominate in contact. We've also looked at ruck control.

"In attack it will be about sustaining pressure, making better decisions and building phase play. I felt we lost it a little last weekend with the final details out wide. Players were wandering a little bit, so it became disjointed."

Whaka have several injuries in the squad including influential player Kelly Haimona, who sustained a concussion in his side's previous fixture.

"Kelly will be out for a few weeks we think," Savage said. "But we have Ryubyn [Vaipo] to step up to the plate. There are a couple of other injuries floating around but we're unscathed in the forwards and have got good depth and strength in this squad to cover any problem areas."
