Rotorua Supper Club organisers Linley and Rob Parry sell table for charity

Not many people would give up their pre-paid $100 seat at a charity event but that's exactly what Supper Club organisers Linley and Rob Parry did last night.

The couple and their friends gave up their nice meal out as part of the annual Supper Club charity event, instead selling their table to a group on the waiting list and securing another $800 for the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Linley Parry said the event was about making the most money for the charity and she knew her table of friends would not have minded giving up their pre-paid seats.

"The demand was so huge so we sold our table and went home where my mum made us some pumpkin soup."

This year's Supper Club, in its 10th year, made a grand total $135,541 which will go towards the upkeep of the Ronald McDonald Family Retreats on the shore of Lake Rotorua.

Families with sick children who have needed to stay at Ronald McDonald House use the retreats as a getaway for the entire family.

Parry said she was proud of the Rotorua community and the support shown for the charity year after year.

"We live in an amazing city. When we started out 10 years ago we had about 17 tables and we thought that was really good. To think we could have potentially 50 to 60 tables next year is amazing.

"By all accounts, the event was a sensational, only-in-Rotorua night and it goes to show that people in our community value and understand what the charity does."

The night, which sees ticket holders go into a draw to find out where they will be hosted for dinner, also had an auction and a raffle for a new Nissan Qashqai donated by Nicholson United Autos.

The car, which raffle ticket holders had a one in 500 chance of winning, went to Denis Marriner.

Parry said Marriner was a "hard working and generous man so it was really neat he won the car".

Marriner said he bought the raffle ticket late last week.

"We weren't at the event so we found out we had won because my phone started going crazy with messages from every man and his dog who were there.

"We've gone to Supper Club events in the past so I knew it was a fantastic cause but you do buy these raffle tickets thinking you'd probably never win so you just kind of forget about it."

Marriner said he and his wife would be picking out the colour of their new car on Saturday.

A host of chefs cooked up a storm for locals last night, including top chef Martin Bosley, Rotorua's Natasha Whitewood and Hera Waitai from My Kitchen Rules New Zealand and Vanessa Baxter from MasterChef New Zealand's 2013 season.
