A group of lucky local high school students have taken a break from their studies to gallivant around Rotorua for a national television show.

Eighteen John Paul College Year 10 students were picked to feature in a segment for the popular TV2 afternoon programme, The 4.30 Show.

The segment, filmed on Monday, aims to highlight activities to do around Rotorua during the school holidays.

The students and presenters Adam and Eve spent time on the Rotorua Duck Tours before having a race at the Amazeme maze.

John Paul College deputy principal Ali McHugh said the students had a lovely day and enjoyed the experience.

"They were pretty excited when they were picked to go and it was good to be able to reward the students who consistently work hard in class."

Ms McHugh said the day wasn't without an educational undertone. "While they were all having fun, they were also learning about what it takes to film a segment and how many takes are required.

"Many of the students were quite surprised at how much time and effort went into creating a five-minute segment."

Madeleine Aislabie, 13, said it was an eye-opening experience.

"I never really understood what was involved in putting together a television show. I was amazed at how many different shots and takes we had to do for a two-minute segment.

"There is a lot of effort that goes into creating a television show like this, which I took for granted before."

Madeleine said she found the whole experience exciting and new.

Troy Martin, 14, said his favourite part of the day was racing the presenters in the maze.

"It's not every day you get to meet people who are regularly on television so that was cool and they were really easy going and neat to talk to."

Both Madeleine and Troy said they would be tuning into the show to see how the final segment turned out.

The episode is set to air on Thursday, April 2 on TV2.
