A Rotorua Lakes High School student has walked away a champion from the National Championships for Bouldering (Sport Climbing).
The event was held in Wellington last month and student Tom Waldin was crowned National Bouldering Champion for the Under 18 category.
Tom was pushed all weekend by Sam Munday, who finished a close second. Both Tom and Sam climbed very well, with stiff competition including a climber from the Australian National squad who they beat into third place.
Other Rotorua Lakes High School climbers competing were Holly Gardner (fourth in the Under 16s) and Josh Halliday (seventh in Under 18s).
After the third and final round of the National Cup Series for bouldering and lead climbing in Auckland at the end of July, Tom was also recognised as top climber across the two disciplines at Under 18 level.
