Police are investigating a robbery at a Rotorua bar this morning.

The incident occurred at approximately 7.55am at the Kiwi Spirit bar on Hinemoa St.

A female staff member heard a knock at the door and when she went to investigate a man forced his way in.

The offender stole a large sum of cash before leaving and a polcie spokeswoman said it was not clear at this stage if he was on foot or had a vehicle.

An initial description indicates he wore a dark top with a distinctive yellow fluorescent design on the back, dark trousers and black and white shoes or trainers.

The staff member is shaken but not injured.

Detectives, as well as a dog handling team, were at the scene this morning.
