Rotorua Lakes High School has appointed its next principal, who will be the first woman to hold the role.

Gisborne’s Gwyneth Cooper will take up the role in Term 1 of next year, the school announced via a social media post today.

The appointment followed title="https://www.nzherald.co.nz/rotorua-daily-post/news/on-the-up-community-asked-for-input-on-rotorua-lakes-high-school-principal-appointment/LPVBKGMFNZHOZM5QKB5OVZ66FA/">the resignation of Jon Ward, who led the eastside school of about 750 students for six years.

The school said Cooper’s appointment was a historic first for the school, “as she becomes the first female principal in the history of our kura”.

“Gwyneth brings extensive leadership experience, deep curriculum knowledge, and a strong commitment to uplifting ākonga, staff, and whānau,” the post said.

“She is excited to connect with our community and begin this new chapter at our kura.

“We look forward to welcoming her into our school whānau and supporting her as she steps into this important role.”

In a statement shared by the school, Cooper said she was excited to be taking up the position.

“Based on what I’ve seen and heard, I know this is a great school. I’ll be working hard to get to know you all and the history of this place, the better to uplift the mana and achievement of all our tamariki mokopuna.”

Copper said she started in teaching as a science specialist and had most recently been at Ritana, Lytton High School, in Gisborne, as deputy principal.

“Outside of school, I am a keen maker and crafter and enjoy tramping. I’m looking forward to the new geothermal and inland freshwater ecosystems to explore.

“I have a passion for developing a rich curriculum that affirms the language and culture of our learners and provides them with authentic, engaging learning, alongside co-curricular opportunities that let our rangatahi try new things and extend their existing skills.

“Working with our teachers and staff to provide excellent teaching and learning as we navigate the curriculum refresh will be a big priority.

“I look forward to meeting you and starting a new journey for Rotorua Lakes High School.”

The school’s board of trustees presiding member, Ben Alton, said Cooper was appointed after a careful and thorough recruitment process.

“She brings extensive leadership, curriculum, cultural and pastoral experience.”

Alton said Cooper was excited to join the school’s community.

“We will soon organise opportunities for everyone to meet her and offer a warm mihi whakatau [welcome].”
