The Rotorua Lakes Council is seeking feedback about the position of a proposed new crossing for cyclists and pedestrians on Tarawera Rd.
In a statement released today, the council said the crossing would be part of a Whakarewarewa Forest Link cycleway with a safety island in the middle big enough
for prams and bikes to get through.
Having a safe crossing that links pedestrians and cyclists to Long Mile Rd and the Redwoods had been a top priority for residents during community engagement and from feedback supplied through council's CyWay website.
The two options are a crossing between Long Mile Rd and Moana Tce, or a crossing between Lynmore Ave and Selwyn Rd (closer to Selwyn Rd).
Residents can have their say by visiting www.cyway.nz and submitting their preference through the feedback portal using the "Forest Link" option, by email to cycling@rotorualc.nz, or by phoning 07 348 4199.
The Whakarewarewa Forest Link cycleway will provide a family-friendly path to the Redwoods and the wider forest beyond. The track will link Fenton St, the Mokopuna Bike Track, and the Redwoods Visitor Centre.
The forest link is still in the planning stage.
Feedback is also welcome on other cycleway projects planned as part of the CyWay network.
The three-year programme includes 10 cycleway projects which will link Rotorua's suburbs with existing and planned cycleways on main routes. Partially funded by Government, the project aims to make riding a bike a safe, viable and enjoyable option for everyone, connecting people to schools, work, shops, the central city and tourist destinations.
These are particularly aimed at those who do not already ride a bike but would consider it for recreation, fitness or as an alternative mode of transport but currently do not feel safe or confident enough to do so.
