Rotorua's job market is on the up with hundreds of new positions being advertised around the district.
According to figures released by Trade Me, job listings in Rotorua are up 23.7 per cent on the same time last year with the number of applicants for each listing also up by more than 10 per cent.
Yesterday, there were almost 170 jobs listed on job website Seek.
Competition for those jobs is strong among applicants, Personnel and Temp Resources recruitment consultant Anne Long said.
A wide range of jobs were on offer with the company seeing an increase in mid-level accountancy positions, human resources roles, and reception and office work positions, she said.
"There's loads of applicants with lots of people moving down from Auckland and quite a few South African immigrants.
"Rotorua seems to be the place to go at the moment, and that's great."
She said with so much competition applicants needed to stand out, but also needed to do the basics well, such as having an up-to-date CV with no spelling mistakes, making sure they turned up for interview early or on time, remembering to turn off cell phones and dress appropriately.
"The majority are really good and we do give candidates pointers to help them along," she said.
A Trade Me representative said the job market was strong and was in favour of candidates with applicant numbers for jobs not growing as fast as job listings so "there is less competition for roles and more options for job seekers."
"We've seen Aucklanders trying to escape the city and applying for roles in the regions, particularly the halo regions of Bay of Plenty, Waikato and Northland."
Rotorua Chamber of Commerce chief executive Darrin Walsh said there was a positive feeling in Rotorua right now.
"Retailers have been telling me their winter has been a lot better than the past few years and that confidence is spilling over into an increase in jobs being advertised and more applications for those jobs.
"Plus, there's the new developments that are underway so it's going to get even better.
"I have no doubt it will continue and we are expecting summer to be a bumper season.
"If businesses are doing well now, they need to plan ahead and start looking for more staff; a lost opportunity is lost business," he said.
Talent ID's Olivia Burman said the company had seen an increase across an array of roles being offered, especially for skilled trade positions, with a range of permanent through to temporary work.
"A lot of work for extra temporary and fixed term support. This is quite normal leading up to Christmas."
She said Talent ID had seen a 65 per cent increase in job applicants compared to the same time last year.
