Rotorua residents wanting to make improvements to their lifestyle but do not know where to start, can find some help at this weekend's Rotorua Health Expo.

The expo will be held at the Village Green, at the lakefront, on Sundayfrom 9am to 3pm.

The event will include free health checks by qualified health professionals, healthy cooking demos, face painting for children and entertainment.

There will also be food hampers to be won and giveaways.

One of the expo organisers Allen Foote says there will be two marquees set up.

One tent will have health checks where people can check blood pressure and fill out a questionnaire, he says.

The information is then put into a computer and tells people what their health age is.

He says participants will then get given a few ideas to make their lifestyle better.

If the doctor running the health check sees difficulties with things such as blood pressure, then they may refer people to their practitioner.

Allen says the second tent will have cooking demos on one side.

There will be at least six different demos and people can watch the food being prepared and take recipes away, he says.

On the other side, there will be a team heating up raw vegan patties. They will have close to 500 to give away, with five different varieties.

Allen says the event is sponsored by the Rotorua Seventh-Day Adventist Church, which runs a lot of health programmes.

"It's purely and simply health. We are there to help people help their health."

Allen says the expo is their way of giving back into the community.

"I think when you look at health statistics, especially here in Rotorua, there are a lot of lifestyle issues such as heart disease and diabetes - things that are physical which people could improve if they just knew how to."

He says giving people the information they need to help themselves is what they are trying to achieve through the expo.

"Anything we can do to better the community is great."
