Families won't have to look far for entertainment over the New Year period - the Rotorua Daily Post GLO Festival is returning to town.

The three-day event will run from December 31 to January 2 building on the popularity of the inaugural festival which had a big family focus.

It will include the popular Party in the Park from 6pm to midnight on New Year's Eve followed by The First Big Brunch on New Year's Day and Summer Fiesta at the Rotorua Night Market on January 2.

Organiser Kylie Lang said her team were busy confirming acts for Party in the Park and she hoped to announce some next week.

"Watch this space," she said.

Party in the Park has replaced Rotorua's traditional Mardi Gras and was last year headlined by Titanium.

She said the "family focussed" event at the Village Green would run from 6pm to 9pm, with a free fireworks display at 9pm.

"It gives families the opportunity to see the fireworks."

The events would continue with more entertainment running through until the traditional midnight countdown.

Last year 10,000 people attended and Ms Lang hoped for a similar number this year.

The R-18 street party would not be held this year.

"We think the bars take care of that sort of market really well."

Feedback about a lack of shade at last year's events had been taken on board and more would be provided, she said.

Other changes included the festival being moved by a day this year, to take in the last day of 2013 and the first two of 2014.

The First Big Brunch will take place on the Village Green between 11am and 3pm on New Year's Day.

She said the event was perfect for people looking for great family entertainment.

"If you're looking for a place where you can have just as much fun as the kids this is the place to be."

Summer Fiesta at the Night Market will see Rotorua's popular Thursday Night Market transformed into a Kiwi summer with sandpits, beach chairs and sun umbrellas as well as lifeguards.

"There will be big tables, like the midwinter Christmas, and a limbo competition."

Senior Sergeant Brendon Keenan of Rotorua police said he expected this year's event to be even better than last year's with a stronger family focus.

Police had been meeting with event organisers and other stakeholders as part of the planning, he said.

"Last year it did seem to be well run and this year I expect it will be even better."
