Police and other emergency services were called to a highway crash north of Rotorua on Saturday morning.

A person has been seriously injured in a crash that’s closed a highway north of Rotorua.

“A serious two-vehicle crash has closed State Highway 36 at the intersection of Leonard Rd this morning,” a police spokesman said.

“The crash was reported about 5.30am and one person was taken to hospital with serious injuries.”

The Serious Crash Unit was doing a scene examination at the site, which is near Ngongotahā, 10km north of Rotorua.

Diversions were in place, the spokesman said.

“The highway is likely to remain closed for several hours. Further information will be released when we are in a position to do so.”
