A young couple who got a bit too passionate in a car parked in Rotorua's central city found themselves behind bars and in court.
The pair, caught performing a sexual act in a parked car in Hinemoa St about 1am Saturday, have been charged with performing an indecent act in public,
for which the maximum penalty is two years in jail.
Regan Hemi Lewis Hofmann, 23, and a 22-year-old woman, who has been granted interim name suppression, appeared before the registrar in the Rotorua District Court yesterday.
Police say the pair had been out with friends in the central city and were spotted by police in a car parked outside the public toilets in Hinemoa St.
Hofmann indicated in court that he would plead guilty at his next appearance.
Hofmann was remanded on bail to reappear before a judge in the Rotorua District Court on Monday, May 2.
The woman, who has been charged, has been remanded on bail until May 5 for police to consider her for diversion.
People granted diversion by police are required to complete tasks, which could be anything from making a donation to a charity or paying reparation to undergoing counselling or completing some community work.
If the tasks are completed, police then withdraw the charges and they are removed from the person's criminal history.
Diversion is offered only if the offender pleads guilty to the charge and is available only at the discretion of police.
