Rotorua community can make a sea of pink to raise funds for the Rotorua Breast Cancer Trust

Being one of the waves in a sea of pink is just one part of the fun-filled evening being held to raise money for a local cause.

Now in its 11th year, the Rotorua Breast Cancer Trust Pink Walk is unique in that all proceeds raised from the event are used to support local people and their families.

With financial assistance from donations, grants and the Pink Walk, the trust is able to provide support to those affected by breast cancer in the Rotorua area.

This year's walk is on Wednesday, 4.30pm to 7.30pm, at the Village Green, Memorial Drive.

The Arts Village manager Mary-Beth Acres says the village has taken part in the walk every year since 2014.

"I first got our team to do it together as a team building activity and there were five of us, but now we have about 20 people including a couple of village bubs."

The village picks a theme for their pink costumes each year. Previous themes have been a pink grape bunch, pink Lego people, pink Emojis and 'Where the Pink Things Are'.

"This year we are going a little bit aquatic, but I won't say too much as we don't want to give the game away."

Mary-Beth says every year they try to plan something elaborate ages out from the event, but every year they are also still rushing around at the last minute trying to pull it together.

"We are an arty bunch, so we try to always make the costume ourselves rather than purchasing it as it is a good challenge - like last year's papier mache masks.

"We enjoy spending time together, doing creative problem solving and learning new things about our team."

She says this walk is a great community event, and a chance to get out and about.

"It is also a really special cause that is near and dear to a lot of us with so many women affected by breast cancer - we all know someone.

"The Rotorua Breast Cancer Trust is amazing and does so much for women in our community, it is also great to support their important mahi."

In a previous Rotorua Daily Post story, Rotorua Breast Cancer Trust chairwoman Sarah Davies says all the trustees are looking forward to seeing the eye-catching costumes of the walkers.

She says the trustees like to reward the dress up efforts of walkers with prizes that are sourced from a large number of generous Rotorua businesses.

"We have prizes for best-dressed female, male, child and business team, as well as spot prizes that we give out at random during the evening.

"We're all very grateful to our sponsors for their donations."

The trust also has the support of major sponsors.

Online registration for the walk is available at rotoruabreastcancertrust.co.nz/pinkwalk/ or walkers can register at the Village Green from 4.30pm on the day.

Adult and teenage entry is $10, and a koha is requested for children aged 12 and under.

Live entertainment, food vendors and activities for the children will all be part of the build-up to the walk which sets off at 6pm.
