ABC Rotorua East children are getting into the spirit of giving for the Rotorua Daily Post Christmas Appeal.

This year's Christmas appeal, benefiting the Rotorua Salvation Army Foodbank, is run in conjunction with the Rotorua Weekender and The Hits 97.5.

Centre manager Carol Orton said it was their second year officially taking part in the appeal.

She said the centre was given toys last year and felt their children did not need them, but there were others who did.

"We wanted to see what we could do to help others at Christmas time that weren't as lucky as we are."

Orton said it was nice for their children to have that sense of helping and looking after others.

She said it was something they liked to develop in their Maori-based community - things such as aroha and whanaungatanga.

This year they would be collecting and donating a combination of food, toys and books.
