Rotorua and Taupō councils go viral with cheeky Valentine’s exchange

Rotorua Lakes Council put up a post asking Taupō District Council to be its Valentine.

Two central North Island councils helped spread the Valentine’s Day spirit with a humorous exchange on social media.

“Shooting my shot ... Taupō District Council, will you be my Valentine?” Rotorua Lakes Council posted on Saturday morning.

Taupō District Council jumped on board, commenting: “We might be a bit wet but we’ve still got it baby!”

The post quickly gained attention, receiving more than 1500 likes and being shared 45 times, including by Rotorua mayor Tania Tapsell.

People flooded the post with more than 150 comments.

“What a power couple this would be,” one person said.

Another was less convinced, commenting: “Bro that’s your cuzin.”

However, a local resident seemed to have sensed a “real-life” opportunity.

“Make a baby, then lower rates please,” they commented.

Several councils also joined in on the conversation.

“Cuteeee! Did we just hear thunder over here, or were you two just happy to see each other?” Whakatāne District Council commented.

Envirohub Bay of Plenty asked: “Are we late to the love triangle? Roses are red, waterways are blue, we plant trees, trap pests and make great Valentines too.”

Rangitīkei District Council shared a cheeky sentiment, commenting: “Get a room ... And then flick us an invite.”

Rotorua Lakes Council delighted its social media community with a humorous Valentine's Day.

There were also alternative suggestions.

South Waikato District councillor Kerry Purdy commented: “I hear South Waikato District Council is single ...”

Another person said: “Here I was thinking Taupō District Council and Ruapehu District Council would be a thing.”

The vast majority of commentators were amused by the post and its comments, with people saying it was “adorable” and “the best thing” they had read all day.

“This has won the internet,” one person said.

“So funny on a grey day. Love the humour,” another said.

However, some believed councils should focus on more important matters.

“What in the huckle berries is going on here? Rotorua Lakes Council you guys must be that bored you have to resort to talking smack on here. How bout taking care of our paru lakes,” one person commented.
