Two Rotorua accommodation providers have taken out their categories in the 2017 TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice Awards.

A number of other Rotorua tourism accommodation businesses also ranked among the best in the country in the awards announced yesterday.

Quest Rotorua Central has been declared the best hotel in New Zealand, with Arista of Rotorua named the best family hotel in the country and Cedarwood Lakeside Motel second in the family category.

Sport of Kings Hotel also featured in the top 10 as the sixth best hotel in New Zealand for service.

TripAdvisor is the world's largest travel planning and booking site and determines its Travellers' Choice winners based on millions of reviews and opinions collected in a single year from TripAdvisor travellers worldwide.

Remarkable service, quality and value are all hallmarks of the awards.

Quest Rotorua Central owners Colin and Lisa MacPhee opened the hotel four years ago after careers working in luxury accommodation providers, including Huka Lodge and Cape Kidnappers.

"The team at Quest Rotorua Central are extremely proud of such a placing on the world's largest travel site," Mr MacPhee said.

"All staff are dedicated to a customer first approach in all that we do which is recognised by our guests.

"It is a great honour to attain such an accolade on TripAdvisor and we appreciate the positive feedback received from our guests in recognition for the quality of service and product offering we have."

Rotorua Association of Motels chairman and owner of Arista of Rotorua and Arista Capri, Mike and Annemarie Gallagher said they were honoured by the award.

Mr Gallagher said understanding the product offering and catering and pricing to their market, plus ensuring there was an investment strategy in place to make sure their accommodation was kept to a high standard, were some of the keys to their success.

"Ensuring guest expectations have been meet and exceeded" was also crucial, he said.

"One factor you can never overlook is your staff. We could not maintain and reach our achievements if it wasn't for our wonderful managers and clean team, we are so lucky to have a great team here at the Arista Group.

"Often you need to remember during the holiday season some people have saved for years for their holiday and they have chosen Rotorua and your accommodation, so have the product to a standard that you would expect if you were in their shoes," he said.

Destination Rotorua chief executive Michelle Templer said websites such as TripAdvisor had become a key tool in the decision-making process for modern travellers.

"They provide an open forum where a visitor can share their experience which in turn can have a huge impact for that business.

"Rotorua is fortunate to have a large number of quality accommodation options and passionate people working in this industry and it is fantastic that these outstanding Rotorua accommodation providers have been recognised for their excellence," she said.
