Rotoiti host Te Puna today, knowing a win could see them return to the top four.

With just one game to play after this, against local rivals Whakarewarewa, a win over third-placed Te Puna will go a long way towards ensuring Rotoiti play semifinals rugby.

After winning their first three games in Premier 1, Rotoiti have lost their last two and slipped to fifth on the table.

However, the battle for top four spots is hotter than a jalapeno's armpit with just six points separating them from first-placed Mount Maunganui.

Rotoiti coach Willie Royal said he expected "a very competitive game".

"They actually like running the ball at every opportunity, I think they like an open game but it depends on the conditions.

"They have a good forward pack that can get them good ball and their backs like to spread the ball from side-to-side and counter-attack when they can," Royal said.

He wanted to see his side step-up to the occasion and play the game in the right areas of the field this weekend.

"Our kick chase needs to be better to put pressure on the receiver of the kick and try to close down his options.

"Play a bit of territory and put the pressure on - the kick chase has been lacking and other sides have been getting free yards.

"We want to get that sorted and try to win our fair share at the breakdown.

"We've identified that we are quite competitive at the breakdown so if we can secure our ball and win a few of theirs we give ourselves a chance."

It would be an important game in the context of the season, he said.

"If we lose we put ourselves out of the running, if we win we put ourselves right back in it.

"The same goes for Te Puna, it's a must-win game for both teams."

Meanwhile, Whakarewarewa are still on the hunt for their first win since qualifying for Premier 1.

They play fourth placed Rangataua at home and will be eager to find some form before their local derby against Rotoiti next weekend.

When asked what he wanted to see from his side this weekend, Whaka coach Joe Savage said "a win would be good".

When these sides met earlier this season Rangataua ran riot on the way to a 71-10 win.

"They gave us a good hiding in round one so I want to see a vast improvement on that.

"It looks like it will be a wet game and that will suit us, so hopefully we come out on top.

"It's our last couple of games together and we just want to see a good all round performance from everyone, especially in defence," Savage said.

Whaka mixed things up at training this week, as their training fields were closed on Thursday, and did a fitness session at CrossFit.

"We finished off with a few set piece walk throughs which was handy.

"[Rangataua] are a good all round team.

"They're very good finishers - given a chance to counter-attack they will most likely finish them off.

"They have a very good and skilled forward pack but in the wet I'm pretty sure we can take them."

Last week Whaka conceded a half century, going down 50-15 against Te Puna.

"We gave them too much time and space out wide, we just need to make tackles.

"We played well for about 20 minutes after halftime, if we can replicate that for the whole game we're in a good spot."
