A Cityride bus window was smashed yesterday when a rock was thrown at it in Rotorua.

Bay of Plenty Regional Council operates the bus services and confirmed a rock had smashed the window of a bus travelling along Sunset Rd about 6.20pm last night.

A regional council spokeswoman said the driver would file an incident report on the event.

There were no passengers on the bus at the time.

A police spokeswoman said they had not been called to the incident but wished to reiterate that throwing objects at vehicles posed a serious risk.

"Motorists deserve to feel safe on our roads and when people throw objects at motor vehicles this poses serious risk to motorists' safety. This reckless behaviour is extremely dangerous and can potentially have fatal consequences," the spokesperson said.

"Those responsible could face charges of endangering transport under the Crimes Act, which carries a maximum sentence of 14 years imprisonment.

"Motorists are encouraged to report to police if they spot this type of activity taking place."
