State Highway 47 has re-opened after a crash left one person in a critical condition.

The two-car crash closed Te Ponanga Saddle Rd near Turangi between Access Rd No 5 and State Highway 41 at 9.10am.

A ambulance communications spokesman said two people were taken to Waikato Hospital by helicopter - one critical and one in a serious condition.

Another person was taken to Taupo hospital by ambulance with moderate injuries.

Emergency services two rescue helicopters, three ambulances, and the serious crash unit had been at the scene.

State Highway 47 was closed between State Highway 46 and State Highway 41 with a detour in place down State Highway 1 and State Highway 46.
