A motorcyclist was fortunate not to have been seriously hurt in a crash near a busy Rotorua intersection.

The bike was in a collision with a car on Amohau St, outside Valentines restaurant, shortly after 4pm yesterday.

A witness, who didn't want to be named, said he heard the sound of the motorcycle accelerating from the lights at the corner of Amohau and Tutanekai Sts and looked up to see the rider "get the speed wobbles" and fall off.

The bike continued and crashed into the rear of a car about 50m from where the rider fell off, he said.

The witness said a police car was just a few cars ahead at the lights when the crash happened.

He said the rider was able to get up and walk to his bike, with no apparent injuries.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
