Review: Rotorua's Tiki Āhua fashion show captures the imagination

It really was a fashion and design extravaganza at the Tiki Āhua fashion show, which I'm sure captured many people's imaginations - not just mine.

The theme of this year's show was Kura Mōwai - Sacred Waters and that was certainly the vibe I got.

Over the course of the night the catwalk was shrouded in mist and bathed in yellow and blue lighting. The use of material in the opening dance sequence captivated the audience.

Every designer whose garments made their way down the runway had their own aura and all of the categories had fresh, innovative looks which drew the eye.

It was hard not to be inspired by the designs and upcoming talent of emerging artists.

Seeing the garments of Rotorua designers, including Adrienne Whitewood, Natura Aura and Taongahuia Maxwell, grace the runway was a great reminder of how much talent there is in this city.

Designer William Waiirua was quite literally a show-stopper, taking a few moments at the end of his line to get the audience up on their feet and teach them a few of his dance moves from the catwalk.

The evening wear section was a personal favourite, showcasing garments from designers Taongahuia Maxwell and Kiri Nathan.

There is nothing I like more than a black dress for an evening out, so when Kiri Nathan's stunning, shimmery dresses made their way down the catwalk I was in awe.

The fusion of Māori culture and designs with fashion is beautiful, and it was special to see these fuse together in the garments and pieces in the weaving and adornment sections.

Seeing live tā moko come to life at a fashion show was also special and a great concept.

It was a stunning event all round and it will be exciting to see what creations appear at future Tiki Āhua shows.
