Music with a message will be showcased at the latest live show by reggae band 1814.

Fans of the nine-piece group will be be able to hear new material mixed with their older songs at their performance tomorrow night at Kalah Bar in Ngongotaha.

Lead singer Darren Katene said they will be performing their new single Perfectly Ugly.

They've recently finished filming the song's music video with Rotorua community organisation, Bully Free Bro.

The song sends out a strong message against bullying, Mr Katene said.

"That came about from my own experience of being bullied and wanting to stand up to that. A lot of people are in the same boat as I was but different circumstances," he said.

"The song is about the bully, the bullied and the third parties who see it but don't do anything about it.

"People in the video clip had obviously been bullied in the past and after hearing the words to the song and saying them back to the camera, I saw liberation."

Mr Katene said the band's music had evolved.

"Partly because we have new band members but it's more radio savvy, more mainstream but we still have our diehard reggae sound. [On Saturday night] we'll have songs from the new album with a totally new line up of stuff and we want to produce an evolved show but still sound the same, the 1814 flavour still flows."

He thanked Kalah Bar owners Missy Hale and Janina Khan for their support and allowing them to record their music and practise at the venue.

The band's new album is expected to be released in February with a name still to be decided.

? 1814 will be performing at Kalah Bar on Hall Rd tomorrow with doors opening at 8pm. Supporting act will be MC Hazadus. It is an R18 event. Tickets are $25 and are available at the Kalah Bar or through Eventfinda 0800 BUY TIX (289 849) or www.eventfinda.co.nz.
