It was raining medals for Rotorua athletes competing at the Special Olympics New Zealand National Summer Games.

The Special Olympics Rotorua team enjoyed their most successful appearance at the event, held in Wellington this week, with 41 of their 45 athletes winning at least one medal. In total the group won 57 medals between them.

Special Olympics Rotorua secretary Jess Gibbs said the athletes returned home on Saturday "really pumped and pretty tired".

"It was a long week away for them and a long trip back on the bus, but they were pretty stoked to be back and to see all their friends and family.

"They absolutely loved it, they're already looking forward to the next one in four years' time. We are so proud of them, they all rose to the occasion and did far better than we had hoped. Coming back with medals was pretty special for them," Gibbs said.

The games started on Monday and by Wednesday the Rotorua athletes had earned medals in football, swimming and tenpin bowling team and doubles competitions.

On Thursday and Friday, the final two days of the competition, the success continued in basketball, indoor bowls and tenpin bowling singles.

Rotorua's basketball team, who went through pool play unbeaten earlier in the week, progressed to the final and ended up winning silver medals.

In the swimming, Tui Martin, who had already won a silver in the 25m freestyle, also placed second in the 25m backstroke. Te Manaia Yates won silver in the 50m freestyle.

The tenpin bowlers added to the team and doubles medals they won earlier in the week with a dominant display in the singles. In the women's competition, Harema Miki won silver in Division Six, Angela Malcolm won silver in Division 10 and Delarnie Smith won Division 12.

In the men's singles Matthew Gibbs won silver in Division 12, Dominic Bowen finished second in Division 22, while John Harvey finished third, and Gregg Hyde won Division 23.

In the indoor bowls Alan Coleman, Kelly Faulkener, Tristan Nicol and Troy Stampa won bronze in the B2 Fours. In the pairs Coleman and Stampa won bronze in Division B4, Paige Sullivan-Hona and Te Waikura Witoko won silver in Division C1 and Allan Carroll and Conor Allely won silver in Division C2.

Gibbs said the Special Olympics Rotorua programme would take a break for the Christmas holidays, but anyone wanting to get involved next year was welcome to message the organisation's Facebook page.

"We'll advertise on the Facebook page when we start our weekly trainings next year. It's good because it gives them that social interaction with their friends week in, week out, and we're looking at including some more sports as well," she said.
