They decided to move it to March to coincide with Whangamata's Beach Hop and hoped to catch people travelling north.
Mr Forlong said pre-registrations for the car show had exceeded 60 so far, though people didn't have to pre-register.
"The whole idea was to bring something unique to Rotorua and something unique to the New Zealand car show scene."
Mr Forlong said with the support of the locals they hoped to develop it into an international festival.
Organiser Jess Caulfield said she loved the fashion of the 50s and 60s, and doing her hair and make-up in that era's style.
"I love the community that has evolved in New Zealand. We have met a lot of people and made a lot of new friends as part of the Pin Up community."
Mr Forlong said he liked the creativeness of the hot rodding custom car community.
They encouraged people to come along to the family fun event.
There will be a free bus running between the racecourse and Eat Streat from 11am to 3pm on both days.
There is also a car cruise tour today around the lake, departing from the racecourse at 12.30pm, with a park-up at the Village Green after.
Tickets for the band shows can only be bought during the day.
