Two people have been critically injured in a South Waikato crash.

Police were called to the two-vehicle crash on State Highway 28/Whites Rd, Putaruru, about 5.20am.

The road is closed at both ends and diversions are in place at the SH1 and SH5 intersection, a police statement said.

“Initial indicators are that there are serious injuries.

“Motorists are asked to avoid the area where possible and to expect delays.”

A Hato Hone St John spokesman said five people were assessed at the scene and two, both in a critical condition, were airlifted to Waikato Hospital.

The remaining three were taken to Waikato Hospital in a moderate condition.
